PROTECTÂ YOURSELF, YOUR WAY!

What is PrEP?
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a highly effective medication that significantly reduces your chances of contracting HIV when taken consistently.

-
Up to 99% effective at preventing HIV through sexual contact.
-
At least 74% effective in preventing HIV through injection drug use.
-
PrEP Options Include:
-
Daily Pill: A simple daily medication.
-
Injectable PrEP (Cabotegravir): Convenient injections every 8 weeks—perfect if daily pills aren’t your thing.
-
PrEP 2-1-1: Take pills on a flexible twice-weekly schedule, with doses spaced at least 3 days apart. Equally effective when used consistently.

Remember, PrEP only works when you follow your prescribed schedule closely, so consistency is key!
What is PEP?
PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is an emergency HIV prevention medication taken for 28 days after potential exposure. It's crucial to start within 72 hours after exposure—the sooner, the better. If you think you've been exposed, contact us immediately or visit your nearest emergency room or urgent care facility.

After finishing PEP, it’s the perfect time to consider switching to PrEP for ongoing protection.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
True T PGH is committed to empowering our community with comprehensive HIV prevention and care options. Here are some common questions and helpful answers:
Why is it important to follow instructions when taking PrEP?
PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) works best when taken consistently as prescribed. Regular adherence significantly lowers your risk of contracting HIV, making it essential to follow your medication schedule closely for maximum effectiveness.
What should I do if I think I've been exposed to HIV?
If you believe you've had unprotected exposure to HIV, you can start PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) within 72 hours to help prevent infection. Seek medical attention immediately—the sooner, the better.
Should I still use condoms if I’m on PrEP?
Yes. While PrEP is highly effective at preventing HIV, it doesn’t protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or unintended pregnancies. Condoms provide additional protection and further reduce your risk.
Are there side effects from taking PrEP or PEP?
Some people may experience mild side effects like nausea, headaches, or fatigue when starting PrEP or PEP. These typically subside within a few weeks. Your healthcare provider will monitor your treatment to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
What exactly is HIV/AIDS?
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) weakens the immune system by attacking cells that protect against illness. Many people show no symptoms initially, which is why regular testing is important. AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) is the advanced stage of HIV when the immune system becomes severely damaged. While there's currently no cure, effective treatments like antiretroviral therapy (ART) can manage HIV, allowing people to live long, healthy lives.
What's the best way to protect myself from HIV?
Daily use of PrEP is one of the most effective ways to prevent HIV infection, especially if you're sexually active or have other risk factors. Remember, HIV is not transmitted through casual contact like hugging, sharing utensils, or swimming.
Do you provide financial support for HIV services?
Absolutely! True T PGH offers many HIV-related services and support resources at little to no cost. We also provide assistance programs to help ensure you have access to necessary care and resources like housing, food, and utilities.
